Background:
Before your car was built, an order for it was placed with Chrysler. It may have been placed by an individual, by a dealer or out of a sales bank. As soon as the order was placed, a Build Record was generated. From the 60s onward, this was an IBM computer punchcard.
The Build Record is the first piece of your car to be manufactured. It contains information about what type of car is to be built, the body style, paint, options, etc. From the Build Record, several Broadcast Sheets were generated and from that a Fender Tag was stamped. As soon as the frame was jigged and the order was released for production (Scheduled Production Date), the Fender Tag was attached to the frame and the car started its journey down the assembly line along with its Broadcast Sheet.
The Build Record stayed with the car as part of the sales paperwork. When the dealer sold the car, they sent the Build Record back to the Zone Office where it was entered into the computer. That's how the original warranty was activated. Then the Build Record was sent back to Chrysler in Michigan where it was stored on microfische.
Today:
Hopefully, your Build Record is still on file in Detroit. Unfortunately, many are not. Some may still exist, but have not yet been organized and thus can't be found. It seems that most prior to 1968 are on file, as well as many after 1970.
What To Do:
Send a letter requesting your Build Record to:
- Chrysler Historical Collection
- CIMS 410-11-21
- 12501 Chrysler Freeway
- Detroit, Michigan 48288
Be sure to include the VIN of the car in question and a self-addressed, stamped envelope. Many of the folks working on this are volunteers, so help them out any way you can.

CONTACTING DEPARTMENTS OF MOTOR VEHICLES:
|
Researching your car's history can provide you with a wealth of information, such as previous repairs, accidents, etc. Sometimes a previous owner will have the original paperwork or a missing Broadcast Sheet. Here's how to get started in finding the previous owner of your car. NOTE: (Please be aware that some previous owners may have passed on and the family may not wish to discuss anything with you. Please respect their wishes.)
Starting with the Department of Motor Vehicles in the state in which your vehicle is currently registered, request a Title History. Don't request a Title Search, as they will probably send you a copy of the title you already have.
Be sure to enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope. Prices vary, but it should cost about $2 per title found. Some states don't keep records more than ten or fifteen years, but that may be enough to help you locate a few previous owners. If your car came from out of state, the oldest title should tell you from which state it came. Now you can request a Title History from that state.
